Public Consultation on the Cost of Disability

During a group session held on March 27, 2026, 50% of the Employability Clare team (6 out of 12 members) contributed to our final submission, drawing from both our professional expertise and lived experience. We utilised the guidance documents provided and based our discussions and recommendations on the suggested questions

Extracted from the Guidance Document / https://www.gov.ie/en/department-of-social-protection/consultations/public-consultation-on-the-cost-of-disability/#screen-reader-friendly-word-guidance-document

  • Purpose of the payment?
  • How would we decide which people would qualify for Cost of Disability payment?
  • How should the payment amount be decided?
  • How should the payment work?

Why is the Government running this consultation now? (extracted from www.gov.ie )

The Programme for Government includes a commitment to introduce a permanent Annual Cost of Disability Support Payment.

This summit is an important step towards developing the new payment. It will also help find ways to reduce the cost of disability. The submissions we receive through the consultation will help guide this work. Together they will help us address the cost of disability in a meaningful and sustainable way.
